Online Resources
Depending on what you need, there various routes to access electronic resources.
For the majority of these items, you will need to use your OpenAthens logon. If you do not have this, please register for this first. You will be able to access the thousands of resources to which the NHS subscribes.
How to access: Electronic Journals
For quick access, go to the Home Page and click on Journal Search and then ‘Go’ to access BrowZine directly.
Alternatively, you can find the journal title that you want on the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub, click on Browse Journals and search by title, subject or ISSN within BrowZine.
You can also search for electronic journals in ClinicalKey or use one of the many subscribed databases with more advanced searching options.
Electronic Books
The UHD’s Knowledge and Library Service provides access to approximately 2,000 eBooks.
Depending on the eBook provider, eBooks have the following benefits:
- Portable – you can open eBooks on most devices and download for offline reading
- Navigable – most eBooks can be searched for keywords
- Personalised – you can highlight text, add bookmarks and notes as you read
- Practical – you can copy images (citing the source!) and print key pages
- Always available – you don’t need to come to the library and no return dates
- Structured – you can save your books to a bookshelf for future use

BMJ
With a mission of working towards a healthier world for all, The BMJ provides news, research, comment and education across the global health sector.
BMJ Best Practice
Using evidence-based medicine, this service provides step-by-step guidance for symptom evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, follow up and prevention. It is updated daily using robust evidence-based methodology and expert opinion.
BMJ Case Reports
Available for UHD staff and students only.
According to their website, BMJ Case Reports is an important educational resource offering a high volume of cases in all disciplines so that healthcare professionals, researchers and others can easily find clinically important information on common and rare conditions. All articles are peer reviewed and copy edited before publication. BMJ Case Reports is not an edition or supplement of the BMJ.
UHD’s subscription also allows UHD employees to submit Case Reports, which is an excellent way to develop a publishing record. The BMJ Case Reports website provides further guidance for authors. If wishing to publish, please contact the library for the code required for submission.
BMJ Learning
BMJ Learning provides support videos and assessment questions. This site also includes a learning tracker, helping you keep control of your CPD.
BMJ Learning is available for University Hospitals Dorset staff and students. If you have any questions about your eligibility, please email us.
BrowZine
BrowZine is a website which enables users to browse, read and monitor e-journals from the journals University Hospitals Dorset Trust or Dorset Healthcare University Foundation Trust in one interface. You can use BrowZine to access articles and your favourite journals on the go.

ClinicalKey
ClinicalKey is a ‘point of care’ search engine, where information is needed quickly. When searching, you will normally see a clinical overview as the first result. Within that record, you can navigate to particular sections such as diagnosis. There are also links to tools such as clinical calculators and decisions trees to help you make evidence-based decisions at the point of care. For more complex cases, terms can be combined to access articles and other supporting documents.

To make the most of ClinicalKey, log in with your OpenAthens account. This will allow to access features such as saving and tagging content, and adding images to PowerPoint for presentations.
From the Library website home page, you can conduct a quick search in ClinicalKey. Here, ClinicalKey is selected and the term to be used entered into the search box. Then click ‘GO’
CINAHL Ultimate
Information Source and Training Resource
Specifically developed for nurses and allied health professionals, this provides access to over 1,800 full-text journals, covering over 50 nursing specialities. In addition, there are learning resources – Quick Lessons, Continuing Education Modules, Evidence-Based Care Sheets and Nursing Instructional Videos.
To access this resource, click on the link below, select ‘CINAHL, Medline, Psychology full text and eBook access’, and tick in the box to choose CINAHL Ultimate.
Cochrane Library
This is a collection of databases and solutions that contain different types of high-quality, independent evidence to inform healthcare decision-making, incorporating Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and Cochrane Clinical Answers.
E-Learning for Healthcare
Provided by NHS England, this service gives access to an extensive library of online training materials.
EBSCOhost
Via the EBSCO platform, you can access CINAHL, Medline, Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection, eBook collection, GreenFILE (environmental), Library, Information Science and Technology Abstracts. Using the Journals A-Z, you can find out if a particular journal is included in the EBSCO databases collection. You can also access the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub via EBSCOhost. By creating your own account, you can save searches for later review and set up alerts.
HSJ
The Health Service Journal is good for locating up to date news and best practice from the UK healthcare setting. This resource is ideal for senior organisational leaders and managers.
Although the articles are not peer reviewed, this is a useful source for sectorial news and developments. The collection includes Trusts who have been nominated for HSJ awards. You can read more about HSJ here.
If you work for UHD or Dorset HealthCare, please contact the library to express an interest in using HSJ, and if approved, an account will be created for you.
We have a limited number of accounts available for both UHD and Dorset HealthCare staff. If your account is inactive (i.e. if you have not accessed HSJ in within the past 6 months) access will be removed and you may need to create a new account.
Kortext
Key eBooks in an accessible format. This platform allows you to save books to your own online library, read offline and create your own notes.
MAG Online Library
A searchable collection of c. 50 online journals.
Nursing and Midwifery CPD Launchpad
Key articles for nurses and midwives progressing towards NMC revalidation. This also includes a free online portfolio for registered users, so that evidence can be saved and downloaded.
Ovid
Via the Ovid platform, you can access MEDLINE, AMED (Allied and Complementary Medicine), Embase (life science and biomedical), Emcare (nursing and allied health), HMIC (Health Management Information Consortium) and Social Policy and Practice databases. You can also search the full text journals provided via Ovid.
Oxford Medical Online
Access to over 150 Oxford University Press medical and healthcare books. Download the list of titles and then filter by format=book and availability=purchased on the left side of the screen to see the titles within the subscription package. Then click on the URL to access the full text.
ProQuest
Via the ProQuest platform, you can access APA PsychArticles, APA PsychInfo, British Nursing Index, Coronavirus Research Database, the Health Research Premium Collection (Consumer Health Database, Health & Medical Collection, Healthcare Administration Database, MEDLINE, Nursing & Allied Health Database, Psychology Database and Public Helath Database), PTSDpubs and Publicaly Available Content Database. You can also search by publication title.
RCNi
This collection has been developed with the whole nursing team and associated health professional in mind. This service provides access to the 11 titles published by the RCN.
Renal Drug Database
The Renal Drug Database is an easy-to-use digital tool for pharmacists, clinicians, and other healthcare professionals prescribing for patients with renal disease or those who receive renal replacement therapy.
To use this resource, which does not use OpenAthens single sign on, please contact the library to request access.
Royal Marsden Manual
Clinical nurse experts from one of the UK’s leading centres of expertise have brought together all the latest clinical evidence nurses need to meet confidently the requirements of their demanding profession. The Manual includes over 350 evidence-based clinical procedures related to every aspect of care, from hand washing to cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Staff Publication Repositories
Comprised of known staff publications, this database is updated monthly with the latest publications from University Hospitals Dorset and Dorset Healthcare University Foundation Trust staff. Articles included range from 2012 for DHUFT and from 2021 for UHD until the present month. If you don’t see your publication listed, follow the link on the page and report the missing information to be featured.
Trip Medical Database
Trip provides access to high-quality research evidence to support your practice and care. Trip allows searching by PICO (Population, Intervention, Comparison and Outcome) as well as basic and advanced searching. The search results can then be filtered by type such as Key Primary Research and Controlled Trials.
Visible Body
Interactive anatomy and physiology tool with links to medical definitions and pathologies. Users can download images, add notes and undertake quizzes.
