About Us
University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust (UHD) Knowledge and Library Services provides a highly visible, dynamic knowledge service for all; to improve and enhance health outcomes through the timely delivery of accessible, quality information.
We are part of UHD’s BEAT (Education) Department.
Services we offer...

Eligibility
There are four categories of individuals who may engage with University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust Knowledge and Library Services. The following sections provide guidance on eligibility and KLS Membership requirement:
University Hospitals Dorset NHS FT and Dorset Healthcare University NHS FT staff
Staff employed by, or working under contract for University Hospitals Dorset NHS FT or Dorset Healthcare University NHS FT
This includes NHS honorary staff, bank/temporary staff, volunteers and Governors.
KLS Membership is required to use KLS services and resources.
Students on clinical or pre-registration placement at UHD or DHC
- Individuals in this category will be based at UHD or DHC Trust sites during the duration of their placement.
- KLS Membership (and access to services and resources) to UHD KLS will be provided for the length of time whilst the student is on placement at UHD or DHC Trusts, not for the length of time that you are enrolled onto their course.
Partner Members
- Individuals in this category include:
- Employees of other NHS and/or healthcare organisations within Dorset working in partnership with the NHS (e.g. hospice staff, primary care, NHS Dorset staff) and clinical attachments
- Individuals with a valid SWIMS library membership provided by another NHS Library Service in the SWIMS region.
- KLS Membership is required for these individuals to use KLS services and resources.
- Visitors to either Library, must complete a Visitor form for each visit, and adhere to the terms and conditions of this as per the Visitor Form.
Public and other External Members
- Any other individuals not included above categories fall into this category.
- Depending on their needs, some patients may need to be accompanied to the library by carers or clinical staff.
- Individuals in this category have free reference access to the Library spaces.
- Visitors to either Library, must complete a Visitor form for each visit, and adhere to the terms and conditions of this as per the Visitor Form. KLS Membership is not required.
- Members of the public should use their local Public Library Service:
All new Library members will be provided with SWIMS Library Privacy Notice.

- Refer to NHS Open ATHENS Eligibility criteria Range of resources available will vary depending upon organisation.
- UHD must use their own computer log in. A generic Library computer log in can be provided to non-UHD staff and students on request from UHS KLS staff during staffed hours only.
- UHD staff only.
- Booking of Library Training Rooms must be completed by UHD staff UHD’s Room Booking system UBook, and in alignment with the BEAT Education and Training Centre Room Usage Policy. Non-UHD staff may request a room to be booked on their behalf via UHD KLS staff.
- Doreset Healthcare staff will require an Out of Hours Card.
